Macron looks forward to U.K. special deal

French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that the United Kingdom could get a special trade deal with the European Union after Brexit.

However, the French president emphasized that Britain will not get full access to the single market unless it accepts the rules.

Macron also warned the UK not to selectively pick the elements it likes in the deal and the president later added that a deal might fall between the single market and a trade agreement.

Macron’s remarks came during his first visit to the UK, where he held meetings with United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May.

In an interview, the 40-year old leader said the UK should not gain access to the single market without complying its preconditions, which include freedom of movement across the EU, budget contributions and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice.

“There should be no cherry-picking in the single market because that’s a dismantling of the single market,” the French leader stressed.

Macron said the UK could have deeper relations with the bloc than other countries, but he ruled out full single market access as the UK decided to leave.
