SDF take control of Daesh capital

The United States-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said on Tuesday that they have taken full control of the former capital of Raqqa from Daesh (IS).

Spokesperson Musafa Bali told reporters that Raqqa’s remaining Daesh militants were cornered in a stadium early on Tuesday after allied forces captured the central hospital that also served as a medical facility and a command centre for so-called Islamic State.

Bali said 22 Daesh militants were killed in the advance on the hospital, with the stadium the remaining obstacle, now captured. The facility was utilized as an arms depot and a massive jail.

BBC News agency says an official declaration of liberation is expected soon.

The offensive to recapture Raqqa from Daesh started in June, and mirrors the progress made in Iraq, where the militants have lost nearly all of their 2014 territory.
